Local Mobilization

Since January 2003, the BMU association has invited the local population to form clubs (which today number 25), which are strong links in the application process but also genuine tools of heritage development within communes, educational establishments, and more.

Club initiative in Auby
Club initiative in Auby

They are independent institutions and bring together members, volunteers, private individuals and professionals: they choose a “theme” linked to mining history and develop it. For example, in the commune of Auby (Nord Département), the club started an exhibition on mining cottage gables, and reproduce enlarged old postcards and photographs, evoking a pit exit, unveiling a group of miners, etc.

In order to guarantee the coherence, success and durability of the fruits of all these operations and initiatives across the Coalfield region, the Mission Bassin Minier is working, in collaboration with DRAC and the BMU, on producing a tool, the Heritage Development Model (Schéma de Développement Patrimonial), to extend throughout the region and bring together all actors around initiatives to implement concerning the protection, management and development of this heritage throughout the Coalfield. It will provide all actors involved in heritage and development with a reference framework adapted both to the various levels of requirements, according to the heritage interest of the elements to be preserved, and to the short, medium and long term management constraints.

The Coalfield cultural landscape preservation and development initiatives in action today are consistent with a spirit of change which is respectful of the Basin's identity: the recognition and development of this industrial legacy is gradually making it possible to establish synergy between a landscape to be preserved for documentary purposes and a new model of sustainable development which sees respect for its historical resources as one of the means of its reconstruction.
